Thin or immersed whitish, beige or pale brown thallus. Numerous grouped or scattered apothecia, reddish to dark brown, often +/- immersed. Spores are 1-septate, 7-10(-12) × (2-)2.5-3.5(-4) µm. Paraphyses with dark swollen tips. Photobiont is Dictyochloropsis. Micrographs below. Chemical results negative

Common on limestone, calcareous rocks and building materials.

Similar: Catillaria chalybeia is found on siliceous rocks
