Species: Normandina chlorococca Photos: Over moss on Cordaline. Skibbereen, Co. Cork, SW Ireland. N.B. Corticolous GBI populations previously recorded as Normandina acroglypta are N. chlorococca The uneven greyish-green thallus forms a diffuse, granular crust with local, poorly defined, concolorous soralia. Young aureoles not subsquamulose. Asci are 8-spored, spores 5-8 septate, (22.5-)27-36(-39) x 6-8(-9) µm. Micrograph below. Chemistry negative Found overgrowing moss and liverworts on (usually) base-rich bark. Widespread in Ireland but distribution is uncertain owing to previous confusion with N. acroglypta. Normandina acroglypta occurs on dead bryophytes on rock, very young areoles are subsquamulose and slightly lobed at margins |
