Thallus forms small or larger, spreading patches of whitish, pale-grey or greenish-grey crowded granules or warted areoles. Large granular soralia are usually present, whitish or creamy-yellow. Apothecia are frequent, discs variable in colour, pale pink to red-brown, greenish or piedbald.

Pioneer species on burnt heathland, often with Placynthiella species. Also found on acidic moorland soils, decaying mosses and tree stumps. Rare on shaded acidic rocks.
Thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV+ whitish

Similar: Trapeliopsis flexuosa, smaller ascospores.
