Irish lichens

Species: Micarea lignaria var. lignaria

Growth type crustose, granular.

Thallus of whitish, pale grey or grey-green granules, usually with abundant globose blackish apothecia. Asci 8-spored, the spores hyaline, 3-7 septate, 16-36 x 4-6 µm. Pycnidia are +/- immersed. Micrographs below.

Common throughout Ireland on acidic substrates. Often found on moss or plant debris, also on peat, timber, shaded rocks and walls.
