Species: Usnea subfloridana Photos: On Larch branch. Gougane Barra, Cork, SW Ireland. Base blackened, branches neither constricted, warty or annulated (with pale rings). Erect and bushy, becoming sub-pendulous with round patches of raised soralia with isidia present. Infrequently fertile, apothecia smaller than those of Usnea florida. Widespread on trees (often on twigs), fences and rocks. Chemical reactions can be variable, either medulla K+ yellow, Pd+ yellow-orange instantly, UV- or K-, Pd- but UV+ white. Similar: Usnea wasmuthii, well developed soralia are oval, flat and without isidia. Pd+ yellow after 1 minute |
