Large thallus with shiny, slightly wrinkled, yellowish-brown or brown lobes. Black underside with rhizines not extending to lobe tips. Short, coarse isidia become confluent, erode leaving white patches. Apothecia frequent, margins often isidiate.

Occurs on well-lit coastal siliceous rocks and cliffs. Also found inland on rocks, roof slates and wall tops.
Cortex K-. Medulla K-, C+/- red, KC+ orange-red, P-, UV+ white
