Growth type crustose. N.B. requires microscopical examination under polarised light (POL) for certain identification.

Thallus whitish or pale grey with a +/- conspicuous white prothallus. Apothecia with persistent, well-developed margins, discs rarely pruinose, pale brown, mid brown, red-brown or dark brown. Medulla with massive crystals, epithecium with large granules not extending between the paraphyses (dissolving in K). Micrographs below.

Occurs on bark and wood (mainly from deciduous trees), also on worked timber. Probably widespread but distribution uncertain owing to previous mapping with L. chlarotera sens lat
