The aggregate comprises Hypotrachyna afrorevoluta and Hypotrachyna revoluta sens. str. Hypotrachyna afrorevoluta was fairly recently described and it is only possible to separate the two species when specimens are mature and with well developed soralia. In Britain Hypotrachyna afrorevoluta appears to be more common in oceanic areas and on rocks and H. revoluta more frequent in eastern districts with higher nitrogen deposition
