Rhizines usually absent. Apothecia rare, discs red-brown. Upper cortex: K+ yellow, UV- Occurs on acid-barked trees, often on horizontal branches, also on upland rocks. Most frequent in N Ireland. Similar: Cetrelia olivetorum has punctiform pseudocyphallae on upper surface
