Cushion-forming minute, interwoven blue-green, blue-grey or brownish filaments, greyer when dry. Filaments smooth or +/- nodulose with single-layered cortex. Photobiont Scytonema. Pycnidia occasional, apothecia are unknown in Britain and Ireland.

Occurs among moss and liverworts on shaded tree trunks in undisturbed boggy woodlands. Rare, mainly SW Ireland.
