Thallus usually pale to dark green, straw-coloured in deep shade, thin or granular. Abundant stalked pycnidia, black, usually with white tips. Apothecia are infrequent, spores 0-3 septate.
Chemical reactions negative.

Occurs under shaded overhangs on rocks, roots and at tree bases, also found overgrowing moss and liverworts.
