Mosaic-forming cracked or smooth chocolate-brown thallus, often violet-tinged. Dark prothallus. Mauve-tinged dark-brown soredia on surface erode leaving paler patches. Apothecia rare.
Chemical reactions negative.

Occurs on damp, shaded siliceous rocks.

Similar: Opegrapha gyrocarpa. Soralia C+ red.
